Winter fake-outs: Skating and snow in SoCal and beyond
Southern California can be so fake in winter. Snow does fall in the local mountains, but Long Beach and Carlsbad? Hardly. It's all part of a need to conjure picturesque holiday scenes despite balmy temperatures. So if you really need to get your (fake) winter on, here are some places to try. And really, you won't need to bundle up at all.

Queen Mary
Chill, the Queen Mary's nod to the cold months, pulls out all the stops with ice skating and sculptures crafted from 2 million pounds of ice. The sculptures, some more than 30 feet tall, are made by Chinese artisans who compete in an ice festival in Harbin in northeast China, where temperatures really are freezing cold.
