Need a Southern California play day? Here are 7 tips from our Travel Show

For the last two years, I've been burning up the freeways between San Diego and Santa Barbara, plying the highways between the desert and the mountains, sampling hundreds of restaurants, hotels, museums, beaches, parks, missions, biker bars, tea rooms, presidential libraries and comic-book shops. The result is a new, expanding version of "SoCal Closeups," an ebook (on Amazon) and iPad app (on iTunes) that gives you enough local travel ideas to cover 200 days -- nearly four years of weekends. (It's good for out-of-towners, too. And the app gives you more than 700 images from Times photographers.) I'll be talking about this at the Los Angeles Times Travel Show today (Feb. 24), but for now, here are seven questions and answers on local destinations. (And in case you're wondering: Yes, I made up the questions.)
