We're cruising down Florida's Turnpike in the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V coupe when a teenager in a thoroughly hot-rodded, custom-painted Honda pulls alongside, gives the CTS-V coupe a long, hard look, then speeds away, a "thumb's up" emerging from the Honda's sunroof.

It appears Cadillac's design studio has finally found a remedy to U.S. automakers' inferiority complex. For decades, the neurosis has afflicted the studios of Detroit, causing them to turn out bland, awkward or copycat designs, while their German and Japanese counterparts created strong visual identities unique to their brands.

Seldom -- OK, probably never -- have I had so much positive reaction to the styling of a station wagon as I did with the 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon. I like the looks of the CTS sedan and the new-for-2011 CTS coupe, but, for some reason, the basic styling template of the CTS seems to work best with the wagon. It is, in a word, a knockout.

With 556 horsepower under its tented hood and a cross-wire grille that looks inspired by the maximum-security wing at Chino, the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V seems, well, sort of aggressive. Remember when Cadillacs were soft and pillowy and ambled around town in a kind of Vicodin haze? Remember when you felt like you needed to slip into supportive undergarments to drive one? Doesn't that seem a long time ago?
