The U. S. Senate campaign that began more than a year and a half ago is now down to its final hours.
On Monday, both Republican George Allen and Tim Kaine were fighting for every last vote.
Allen spent his last full day of campaigning with the man at the top of the ticket. Allen helped to warm up the crowd that had gathered at Lynchburg Regional Airport to hear Mitt Romney.
Making a passionate pitch to a large crowd of Republican supporters, Allen described the election as "our generation's date with destiny." And he said the time has come to rein in big government.
“We need government that's off our backs, and out of our pockets. And have a government that's on the side of job-creating small businesses,” Allen said.
Allen told the crowd he's confident that when the votes are counted Tuesday, people across the United States will applaud Virginia for, in his words, "standing strong for freedom."
“They're going to be looking at how's central Virginia voting, how's Southside voting. And they're going to say look how those folks in Virginia are voting. thank goodness they are standing strong for freedom. Let's go on to victory and get America ascending once again. Thank you all.”
Recent polls have shown Kaine with the lead, but Allen's supporters insist they are closing the gap. They also hope the momentum of the Romney-Ryan ticket will help to push them over the top as well.
Allen finished his day in Northern Virginia. He'll be making his way back to Richmond on Tuesday, where he hopes to celebrate his return to the U.S. Senate.
