Thousands of Virginians waited in line for hours to vote in November. Now, Virginia Democrats are proposing changes in the state's election laws.

Long lines were common on Election Day in some Roanoke precincts and in many other polling places around the state.

Democratic lawmakers, including Roanoke Delegate Onzlee Ware, are introducing legislation that would allow more early voting, and extend the hours for voting on election day.

“I don't know what the fear is, quite frankly,” Ware said. “I don't know why we're afraid to look at a situation that is probably archaic and was set up probably 30-40 years ago, and why we're afraid to look at it now and dissect it some and try to make it better.”

Democrats are also proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow the automatic restoration of civil rights for non-violent felons who have completed their sentences.

Governor Bob McDonnell endorsed automatic restoration for non-violent offenders during his State of the Commonwealth Address Wednesday night.
