Please donate a used bra at any of the drop off locations. Shamus and Annie will take the donated bras and string them across the pedestrian bridge on Tuesday October 25th in a show of "support" for Breast Cancer Awareness.
Breast Cancer Information from The YWCA Women's Cancer Program:
The YWCA Women’s Cancer Program is dedicated to educating women about the importance of early detection in the fight against breast and cervical cancer and facilitating access to medical screenings, follow-up diagnostic procedures and being the avenue to treatment funds for our target population. The program assists women by:
- Empowering them with knowledge to help them make good choices in their breast health care,
- Breaking down barriers and eliminating disparities so these low-income, uninsured, underinsured women can receive breast cancer screenings
- Helping them navigate the medical system so they receive all the necessary services.
- We also provide transportation or assistance with gas money,
- Translation services for Hispanic women,
- Assistance with scheduling appointments,
- Reminder calls for upcoming appointments,
- Coordination with specialists to insure all the reports and other necessary information are at appointments,
- Contact patients who no-show their appointments reschedule missed appointments.
- Offer lay patient navigation services for any patient who has an abnormal finding through diagnosis and all the way through her cancer journey.
- We have working relationships in 23 west central Indiana counties with 18 hospitals and over 100 medical providers who have agreed to see the women we refer
- We pay the providers for Pap test, clinical breast exams, mammograms, ultra sounds, and biopsies
- Counties served: Benton, Boone, Carroll, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Fountain, Greene, Hamilton, Howard, Jasper, Miami, Montgomery, Newton Parke, Pulaski, Sullivan, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Vermillion Vigo, Warren, and White.
- Our program runs completely on grants, fundraising and donations.
- We do not charge for any of our services.
Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations:
- Women 40 and older should get annual mammograms
- All women should do monthly self exams
- Women under forty, when a problem is present or a strong family history of breast cancer, may need a mammogram or ultra sound
What do I need to know about breast cancer?
- Being a woman is the greatest risk factor for developing breast cancer
- Mammograms are the best available method to find breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
- Breast Cancer ranks second among cancer deaths
- The risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer increases with age but many women under forty are diagnosed with breast cancer. (Of the 25 diagnosed this year, 15 were over 50, 7 were 40-49 and 3 under 40)
- When breast cancer is found at its earliest and most treatable stage, the five-year survival rate is 98%
- The incident rate among white women is higher than African American women but the death rate is high among African American women. This is due to several reasons: 1. Lack of access to medical services, distrust of the medical community and many times a more aggressive form of cancer.
