Evan and his buddy Keely
I'm Evan. I turned 16 a few weeks ago, and like any other 16 year old, can't think of anything but getting my license on February 15 (one month and one day from my birthday). That will have to wait for awhile though because I have just been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and will be at Riley for awhile. Everyone tells me I'm a great kid. I don't know. I'm just being me which is pretty easy. God has presented a new challenge to me now, and it is sure to test my strength, the strength of my family and friends, and our faith. I'm ready for the challenge though and hope you'll join too. Hang on tightly, and STAY STRONG!

Oliver is a miracle baby! He has surpassed all odds and expectations set before him. Through there were no signs of problems during pregnancy, Oliver was not breathing upon birth. He was revived, but still suffered from breathing difficulty during his first few weeks of life. Over time and much treatment at Riley his breathing condition has improved and doctors are still in the process of finding a proper diagnosis. He is happy and healthy and now able to run around and play!

Tyler was winning his battle with cancer for nearly 3 years. Due to relapse, it was determined that he would need a bone marrow transplant in order to survive. Unfortunately, a match could not be found and in 2009 at age 14 - Tyler joined the approximately 2,000 children who die from Leukemia annually in the United States.

Welcome to Riley Hospital for Children, the only hospital in Indiana devoted exclusively to providing comprehensive care to children. The hospital, named for Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley, opened its doors in 1924. Today, Riley has 262 beds and more than 7,000 inpatient stays each year.

The atrium serves as a welcoming area for families and the location for many patient events throughout the year. Children love seeing the stuffed animals high above, tossing pennies in the "stream," and watching the glass elevators. At the back of the atrium is the facade of the original hospital built in 1924, to the right is the 1971 addition, and to the left is the 1986 addition.

The Raggedy Man Gift Shop is a favorite stop for patients and families. The gift shop name comes from a popular James Whitcomb Riley poem. The idea for Riley Hospital came from friends of Mr. Riley who wanted to commemorate the famed poet's life while providing a desperately needed pediatric medical care facility in Indiana.

These critically ill infants are transported directly from their local hospitals many using our state of the art transport system. Riley's family-centered philosophy ensures quality care in the warmest, most personal manner.

At Riley Hospital, separate treatment rooms keep a patient's room and the playroom as a "safe place" and free from even necessary medical procedures. A parent is welcome to stay in a child's room overnight. Sleeping accommodations are available on all non-intensive care units, along with televisions and telephones for patient and family use.

Riley Hospital has the only pediatric burn unit in the state. Special tubs, like this one, are for wound hydrotherapy treatments. Children sit in the tub to have their burn wounds carefully cleaned, which helps their skin begin to heal. Brightly painted walls make the tub rooms more child-friendly. Likewise, since many of these kids are confined to Riley's Burn Unit for long periods of time, a large picture window overlooks the atrium and keeps patients connected to what's going on around them.

At Riley Hospital, occupational and physical therapies become "play" sessions for patients. Here patients strengthen their bodies, fine motor skills, coordination and sensory development through interactive therapy disguised as fun activities or sports. As always, family members are encouraged to take part.

The Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) transports critically ill or injured patients from hospitals throughout Indiana and the Midwest to Riley Hospital for Children. A special team including a doctor or nurse practitioner, a nurse, a respiratory therapist and an emergency medical technician provides patients the same level of care they would receive in one of Riley's intensive care units. Riley makes more than 1,200 transports each year in four MICUs and recently began conducting neo-natal air transports.

Registered nurses, practical nurses and patient care assistants provide hour-to-hour care.
